The Rock Counseling Group - Champaign IL

Family Counseling involves the members of a family unit meeting together with their therapist. Ideally, no members are omitted, but family therapy is still possible and helpful even if not all family members are able or willing to participate. Family therapy serves to assist in identifying complex family relationships and the problematic patterns that can occur, and to offer the opportunity for exploring alternative choices. Communication problems are often focused on, as patterns can indirect and subtle. An important function of the therapist is to facilitate bringing about more clarity in communicating with one another. It is very important for each member participating in family therapy to be given a voice in this process so that the family can change old perspectives and behavioral choices to move towards more functional and helpful ones.

Children and Adolescent Counseling involves counseling and therapy being provided in a variety of ways. They will receive emotional support, resolve conflicts with people, understand feelings and problems, and try out new solutions to old problems. Goals for therapy may be specific (change in behavior, improved relations with friends or family), or more general (less anxiety, better self-esteem). The length of counseling depends on the complexity and severity of problems. The relationship that develops between the therapist and the patient is very important. The child or adolescent must feel comfortable, safe, understood, and validated.

How do I get started?

Your first step is to call us to schedule your initial appointment. You will be asked to provide some initial information over the telephone to help us evaluate if our office is your best treatment option for you. You may then be scheduled for an initial session which provides an opportunity for the child or teen to build rapport with the therapist and provide him/her with some background about themselves and their family. As a parent or caregiver you are a valuable and important part of this process and we will discuss with you reasons you are seeking counseling for the child, teen, and/or family. In this initial session your therapist will be able to answer your questions regarding services, fees, confidentiality and what to expect in therapy.

Our staff is dedicated to developing a collaborative relationship with you in which we try to decide together what kind of treatment would be best for the child, teen, and family.

At the end of that first session, if we decide that it is in your best interest to move forward working with your therapist, you will decide on a mutually-agreeable time slot for your therapy sessions (typically, the client and therapist will meet once a week, and each session will last approximately 45-50 minutes).
